Period Positivity Statement

May 24, 2023

Alumna Erin Swank (M.S. Ed, Class of 2021) created this Period Positivity Statement to display her classroom. Please feel free to download this and hang it in your classroom!

Period Positivity Statement Menstruation is something we should all feel comfortable discussing openly. Let’s forget the hushed whispers, the silencing of pad and tampon wrappers behind stall doors, the euphemisms (like “aunt flow”), the hiding of tampons in sleeved wrists, and the needless shame associated with periods. Periods are a normal, necessary, and celebratory process! Not all women menstruate and not ONLY women menstruate. And every person who does menstruate deserves to do so with dignity. Please help yourself to the tampons and pads you need! Your period doesn’t need to distract you from learning. If you need a moment during class, please feel free to take one. There is no limitation on bathroom breaks or trips to the nurse to tend to your needs as a human! Menstruation is an important process for everyone to understand. Knowing about this process breaks down the stigmas associated with it. Let’s avoid generalizations such as, “it must be their time of the month” and recognize that such statements are deeply rooted in sexism. Let’s treat one another with compassion and help one another to feel healthy and comfortable in our bodies!
