Northwestern Inter-School Transfer

Are you a Northwestern undergrad interested in joining the SESP community? Students who are interested in applying to transfer into SESP can participate in the Interschool Transfer process. Please note that the current IST process will open September 23 and close October 16, 2026.

You will follow this process: 

  1. Attend the SESP IST Information Session in the Student Affairs Office 2001 Sheridan Road, suite 1330. Sign up for an information session here.
  2. OPTIONAL for 1st and 2nd Years/ MANDATORY for 3rd Year+: Email SESPSAO@northwestern.edu to schedule an appointment with a SESP academic adviser if you have more questions after the info session. Please include several days and times when you are available for a 20- to 30-minute virtual or in-person advising meeting during the quarter. You may also schedule an appointment in person after your info session if you still have questions.
  3. Submit the official Interschool Transfer application through the Registrar's Office.

Concentration-Specific Considerations: Elementary Teaching

Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences students who wish to pursue elementary teaching licensure must apply to the program by the fall of their third year and complete the requirements of the elementary teaching concentration. They also must complete the degree requirements of the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.

Concentration-Specific Considerations: Secondary Teaching

Students from Weinberg who want to pursue secondary teaching licensure must apply to the program by the fall of their third year and complete the requirements of the secondary teaching concentration. They also must complete the Weinberg degree requirements.

SESP Transfer Policy: Attempt Limits and Nullification Rules

SESP only permits students to apply to IST for a total of three attempts. This means that should you find your application nullified three times, you would no longer be allowed to apply to transfer into SESP beyond that point.

SESP nullifies transfers if a 2.0 cumulative GPA is not maintained or a student earns a grade lower than a C- in a course
