This certificate helps you develop the skills to ethically lead and manage organizational change in a world shaped by generative AI and emerging technologies. It focuses on the need for leaders to carefully consider the impact of AI tools in businesses and non-profits. You will learn to think critically about AI, analyze its effects, and create strategies, interventions, and policies for using AI and other technologies responsibly in organizations.

Flexible Certificate Options

This certificate will be offered in a hybrid format, allowing you to participate in weekly 90-minute class meetings via Zoom and attend a 2.5-day intensive session in person. The flexibility is ideal for non-residents and working professionals.

Degree + Certificate Option

You can earn a certificate while pursuing a Master of Science in Technology, People, and Policy degree (MTePP) or a Master of Science in Learning and Organizational Change (MSLOC). Sequence the certificate and degree according to your schedule and priorities.

Certificate-Only Option

To earn your certificate as a stand-alone graduate program credential, complete the four required courses plus cohort learning activities throughout one year.

Curriculum

The four courses will immerse you in the latest research and applications of emerging technologies in a variety of organizational contexts. You'll learn with colleagues eager to understand both the basics of these technologies and important considerations for effective, ethical implementation for organizational change.

Course Descriptions and Learning Objectives

MTePP: Current Trends in Technology Innovation across Research and Industry

Learning Objectives
  • Understand and explain AI concepts, terminology, and applications, including the difference between machine learning, deep learning, and other AI techniques.
  • Explain types and use cases of common AI algorithms.
  • Critically evaluate and use AI tools and visualizations for effective decision making.
  • Identify benefits and risks of AI adoption by organizations.
  • Apply ethical and legal considerations of AI, including bias, transparency, and accountability.

MSLOC 430: Creating and Sharing Knowledge

Course Description
In this course, students explore digital workplace technology and its impact on organizational knowledge and organizational learning in the workplace. The course introduces concepts and frameworks to enable students to understand knowledge sharing and learning within communities and networks of practitioners, understand the unique attributes of digital workplace technology as it applies to organizations, and understand current and emerging uses of that technology to change the way people work or learn. Finally, students learn to apply course concepts by designing solutions to business case challenges.

Learning Objectives
  • Develop a digital mindset in how technology (e.g. artificial intelligence, learning management systems, social learning) can help organizational challenges.
  • Use an approach to look at enterprise technologies that softens the perception of complexity and continuous change.
  • Use MSLOC design process to develop a technology solution to a strategic organizational challenge.
  • Develop practical approaches for adaptive leadership in dynamic environments.
  • Critique approaches for integrating AI into organizational learning and knowledge management.
  • Identify the strategic implications of AI adoption within organizations.
  • Analyze AI-generated content for appropriate use in knowledge creation/sharing.

MTePP: Technology in Context

Course Description

This course explores the social and cultural dimensions of technology through the lens of Science and Technology Studies (STS) theories. Students will examine how technological innovations are influenced by and, in turn, shape societal values, power structures, and cultural practices. Through case studies and theoretical readings, the course provides critical insights into the role of technology in contemporary policy and everyday life, fostering a nuanced understanding of the complex.

MSLOC 456: Designing Solutions for Organizational Effectiveness

Course Description

This course explores how to design effective solutions for enhancing organizational effectiveness. Students will learn to employ design principles, including techniques for discovery, ideation, and experimentation. Through case studies and practical exercises, participants will develop actionable skills in identifying and reframing problems, generating innovative solutions related to artificial intelligence, and testing their effectiveness. By embracing collaboration and a mindset of continuous learning, students will be equipped to drive meaningful improvements within their organizations.

Learning Objectives

  • Develop an understanding of design methods (discovery, ideation, and prototyping) as a problem-solving framework for implementing AI solutions.
  • Learn and apply interview research methods to uncover user needs and understand the perspectives of various stakeholders.
  • Gain experience in designing development programs for AI solutions, drawing on research, best practices, and user feedback.
