How should risk be understood when technology evolves faster than our institutions can respond? And what does responsible leadership look like when certainty is no longer available? These are not abstract or future-facing concerns—they are strategic, ethical, and organizational challenges leaders are already navigating in real time.

What Organizational Leaders Can Do Differently—Now

1. Treat AI decisions as organizational power decisions

AI is not a neutral capability. Decisions about platforms, vendors, data access, and infrastructure determine who gains influence, who becomes dependent, and how flexible the organization can remain over time. As Witt put it during the conversation: “We know the one fact that is for sure about AI is that it is going to get cheaper and more powerful every year, and the question is who is positioned to take advantage of that.”

Leadership takeaway: Before approving an AI initiative, leaders should ask:

  • Where does control concentrate as a result of this decision?
  • What dependencies are we creating—internally and externally?
  • How difficult would it be to change course later?

Leaders are being asked to make consequential, long-term decisions while experts disagree on timelines, impacts, and threats. As Witt noted, “In AI, the field is completely split about whether the biggest risks are imminent or wildly overstated.” Ryan Smerek underscored the organizational reality, “We’re making decisions and building systems before we actually agree on what problem we’re trying to prevent, or even what kind of risk we’re most worried about.”

AI doesn’t just automate tasks; it reshapes how knowledge is produced and trusted. When systems generate insights or recommendations, learning becomes co-produced by people and machines. As Witt described, AI increasingly influences not only answers, but the questions organizations think to ask.

  • Where human judgment remains essential and non-delegable
  • How AI-generated insights are interpreted, challenged, and contextualized
  • How to prevent speed and volume from substituting for understanding
  • Without explicit design, organizations risk mistaking output for understanding.

4. Design responsibility into the system—early

Ethics and governance cannot be added after AI is deployed. They are part of the design problem from the start.
